Coach in 2026: A Full Guide to the Label

Few American fashion brands are more familiar than Coach, and in 2026 its sales are growing at a strong pace. These days the brand sells clothing, shoes and accessories in stores worldwide, even though it was born as a tiny leather workshop and over time became a handbag specialist. Its core idea has held firm for decades: well-crafted leather goods priced below the traditional European luxury houses. As described by a federal court, that space is accessible luxury, distinct from mass-market fashion on one side and true luxury on the other.

This guide walks through where Coach came from, who owns and manages it, how big the business has become and what it offers. It additionally clarifies how a full-price coach store is different from a coach outlet, which can easily cause confusion. The prices given are observed market prices instead of official list prices, and each figure carries the date of its source.

From a Manhattan Leather Loft to an American Icon

The Coach story starts in 1941, when a small family-run leather workshop opened its doors in Manhattan. Six leatherworkers employed in a loft on 34th Street made men’s wallets, billfolds and other small leather goods, as Coach now tells the story. Handbags followed later, along with the Coach name, which was adopted around 1960 or 1961. Contrary to some incorrect accounts, Miles and Lillian Cahn were not the original owners of the workshop.

By around 1950, Miles was running the factory, some years after joining the business together with Lillian in 1946. The Cahns took control in 1961, when the pair purchased the interests of the original owners. The idea of adding women’s handbags is said to have come from coach tabby Lillian Cahn, and this step reshaped the company. Miles Cahn is credited with glovetanned leather, a finish inspired by the way a worn baseball glove grows softer with use.

The Era When Bonnie Cashin Refreshed Coach

The designer most closely linked with Coach’s early years is Bonnie Cashin, who served as its first lead designer. She was not a co-founder of Coach, and she is said to have served under contract rather than as an employee. Her start date is a small puzzle, because Coach’s own pages give it as both 1961 and 1962. What is not in doubt is that she designed for Coach until 1974.

Bonnie Cashin unveiled the brass turnlock closure in 1964, with Coach stating that the toggle on the top of her convertible was the inspiration. She is also credited with side pockets, coin-purse details and brighter colors that relaxed the brand’s look. Today, the turnlock remains one of the best-known Coach details, appearing on bags such as the Cassie crossbody.

From Sara Lee to Tapestry: A History of Owners and Listings

Coach was acquired by Sara Lee Corporation in July 1985. In October 2000 the company became publicly traded, and then, the following year, Sara Lee is said to have completely exited. Coach’s Signature collection, with the „C“ monogram, launched in 2001, so the pattern is not the mid-century heritage motif it can appear to be. The corporation, Coach, Inc., was renamed Tapestry, Inc. on 31 October 2017, and its ticker symbol switched from COH to TPR.

Only the parent company adopted a new name, while the Coach brand, its stores and its products kept their names. Tapestry sold Stuart Weitzman to Caleres through a sale that closed on 4 August 2025, ending an era that started when Coach, Inc. purchased the shoe label in 2015. Of the only two brands Tapestry owns in 2026, Coach and Kate Spade, it is Coach that is by far the bigger.

The Abandoned Capri Takeover

Tapestry revealed on 10 August 2023 that it had struck a deal to purchase Capri Holdings, the parent of Michael Kors, Versace and Jimmy Choo. The Federal Trade Commission challenged the deal in April 2024 and asked a federal court to halt it with a preliminary injunction. A federal judge in the Southern District of New York issued the preliminary injunction on 24 October 2024. The order did not settle the merits, but it prevented the companies from closing the transaction while the challenge went on.

The court’s decision accepted the existence of an accessible luxury handbag market, one that is different from both mass-market bags and true luxury. Arguing that the legal process was unlikely to be resolved before their February 2025 deadline, Tapestry and Capri called off their agreement on 14 November 2024. As the acquisition was never consummated, Tapestry has no ownership of Michael Kors, Versace or Jimmy Choo.

Who Runs Coach Today

Joanne Crevoiserat is chief executive of Tapestry, the parent company. The brand itself is headed by Todd Kahn, Coach’s CEO and brand president, having taken the job on an interim basis in July 2020 and kept it permanently from April 2021. The creative lead is Stuart Vevers, whose appointment was revealed in June 2013.

Vevers continues as Coach’s creative director in 2026, his first Coach collection having reportedly been presented in February 2014. His path to Coach reportedly passed through Mulberry and then Loewe, where he worked as creative director. With Vevers in charge, Coach has drawn heavily on its archive, reissuing older designs while also reworking vintage shapes into new bags such as the Tabby. New York’s Cunard Building hosted the show of his Fall 2026 collection on 11 February 2026.

Coach in Numbers

Tapestry’s annual report for the fiscal year ended 27 June 2026 provides the sharpest picture of Coach’s size. Coach’s net sales reached $6,914.7 million, up 24% on the prior year, while Tapestry as a whole reported $8,004.2 million. Put another way, approximately 86% of group sales were produced by Coach.

Coach’s count of directly operated stores reached 973 at the end of that fiscal year: 336 in North America and 637 internationally. You may also see a figure of about 1,299 stores, but that figure counts all Tapestry stores, not Coach alone. Tapestry further noted that the average unit retail price of Coach handbags rose at a mid-teens percentage rate during the year. Part of that rise, according to the company, is linked to reduced promotional activity.

Handbags, Apparel and Footwear: What Coach Makes

Handbags remain the heart of the business, and coach handbags today blend structured icons with soft, slouchy leather. Important launches include the Tabby in 2019, based on a 1970s archive shape, the Rogue in 2016 before its 2021 return, and the Brooklyn, a relaxed coach shoulder bag, in August 2024. The Empire Carryall was unveiled on the Fall 2024 runway and put on sale in February 2025. The Kisslock Frame Bag, reportedly the opening look of the Fall 2026 show, was observed at $350, while a Rogue 25 in alligator was recorded at $8,000, the highest bag price observed. Items in the Coach Originals line are not vintage: these are archive designs reissued as newly made bags.

Ready-to-wear is now a serious part of the range, and coach clothing for Fall 2026 included varsity jackets in leather and in leather with wool, the brand’s first all-shearling varsity jacket, peacoats and suede coats. The same show brought blazers, flared trousers, A-line skirts, floor-length high-collar dresses and all-gender jacquard knits. The fashion press reported loafers, clogs, booties and sandals for fall, while footwear also includes sneakers such as the Soho Sneaker and the laceless Skate Sneaker. Coach also runs Coach (Re)Loved, launched in 2021 and reported to cover trade-ins, restored bags and upcycled pieces, plus Coachtopia, a circular-design sub-brand launched on 20 April 2023.

Where to Shop: Coach Store, Coach Outlet and Online

The largest flagship stores go by the Coach House name, and each full-price coach store offers the current collections. The New York Coach House on Fifth Avenue reportedly opened in 2016, and a new Coach House at 645 Fifth Avenue has been reported as targeted for 2027. London’s Coach House on Regent Street also opened in 2016, and in the UK the brand is stocked by Harrods, Selfridges and John Lewis as well. Whether you want a structured coach bag, a coach tote bag or a new jacket, the full-price range is the place to find the latest season.

Physical outlet stores and an official online outlet section on Coach’s own website make up Coach Outlet, Coach’s own official channel. In 2014, Coach’s head of investor relations was quoted as saying roughly 85% of outlet merchandise was made for the outlet channel, but that figure is now dated, and Tapestry has since spoken about bringing some full-price product into outlets. Claims that outlet bags are always worse, or exactly the same as boutique bags, go beyond the public evidence. British outlet stores include Bicester Village, Cheshire Oaks and Ashford Designer Outlet. When searching for the brand, shoppers sometimes type „couch“ or „cosch“, so it pays to check that any site promising steep discounts is really Coach’s own website or a known retailer.
